Did you get lost in cyberspace in 2020?
I did. I did to the point that I almost forgot where my home is.
Technology definitely is a double-sided coin.
Thanks to it I am able to live in one city, study in another one, work in the third one. It is beautiful and unifying and it feels like the whole world is on your fingertips…
Does it, really?
Then why do I feel disjointed so often, like the pieces of me are scattered around the world like some Voldemort bullshit? My body is torn apart between two, three, six time zones. Is it 9 am or 6 am? Is it today already or still yesterday? Or maybe tomorrow?
Cyberspace connects us but breaks us apart; so I close my computer and turn to the only item I find grounding. It is my bike.
I hop on it and we go, go, go places, go against the wind, inhaling this ocean air, sinking in the scenery, the energy of my city, just to be reminded, what does it feel like to be connected to the place, to be one with the built and non-built environment around me. I feel hungry for more, so I stop often, I read the billboards that, I notice, are always place-specific: most of them talk about the rainy days or the Great Outdoors we appreciate so much living here. It makes me think that these billboards are made for us, here, and they must look different in the city where “I study”, or the city where “I work”?

I stop again, I take countless photos of crows, seagulls, geese, the birds we tried colonizing, but they’re so good at sharing this urban space with us, they have adapted to the city life so well. They’re full of swagger and pride. They coexist.
I ride downhill through the familiar crossroads of East Van. It is Wall Street at the Portside that often reminds me of where I live, and where my home is. How strange the Network Society is if we need a constant reminder about such things as your place of residency.
Soundscraper is a reminder of where we live. It is cyberspace dedicated to physical places. My true intention behind this blog is that my stories will help all of us reconnect with where we live, now that we need it most. Ironically, I am using a virtual platform for it.
Soundscraper is meta.
Thanks for the journey, the moment, the easy read, and the reminder of my love for bike riding! May just take it in for a lonnng overdue tune-up, thanks to your inspiration!
